The term embraces such popular folktales ( Märchen ) as “Cinderella” and “Puss-in-Boots” and art fairy tales (Kunstmärchen) of later invention, such as The Happy Prince (1888), by the Irish writer Oscar Wilde. They always do the opposite of whatever she tells them to do—they stay in bed when she wakes them, they make a mess when she asks them to clean. None of the stories from these five books are annotated here; all are worth looking at. One expects to find "sex, violence, cannibalism" in material for adults; what makes fairy tales' adult-level naughtiness so enticing is the transgression of cultural constructions of the innocence of childhood—and of its stories.

This work intentionally and unintentionally identifies individuals with groups and provides worldviews and ways of knowing and believing.
