Books that would be considered R rated are excluded from this list. By this we mean science fiction, fantasy, slipstream, etc. Bubbling fountains gurgle soft whispers, soothing one’s very soul. This is just the way the numbers shook out; I had no preconceived number for anything in mind when compiling each ever-narrower list. I’ve discovered authors like Nancy Kress (Nano Comes to Clifford Falls and Other Stories), Paolo Bacigalupi (Pump Six and Other Stories) and Ted Chiang (Stories of Your Life and Others) through short fiction collections and am still unreasonably fond of those.

There are few other collections that offer such an interesting dialogue. First published in l972 as 'The First Margaret Mahy Storybook', many of these stories have been loved so much that they have appeared in many anthologies - and in many countries - over the years. The book features a foreword by Helena S. Regular horror genre readers won't have a problem picking up Vile Things but casual browsers would probably take a pass which is a shame because there is some wonderful writing within. Section three, "Voices from the Phantom World", is the most positive of the sections. Also study Otto Penzler's annual anthology [The Best American Mystery Stories] and the one Marty Greenberg and I edit. It is too bad, but the print magazine appears to have ceased publication. Jakubowski is not only an editor of crime fiction but also a writer of erotic crime novels and the owner of the London bookshop Murder One, which unfortunately does not exist anymore. The selections, from Brits like Barry Fantoni and Mike Ripley, as well as Yanks like Robert Crumley and Andrew Vachss, make it worth your time.
