At the outset, the Cyberpunks believed they were creating a renegade genre. There are surprisingly few aliens in Cyberpunk given the history of science fiction as a genre — with difference created through ethnic and subcultural difference, people living beside each other yet coming from different worlds, rather than close encounters of the first, second or third kind. In my opinion the derivative piffle is a minor issue. The NSA listens to every byte crossing the world.
